Hoboken

Peter Stuyvesant, Dutch Governor of Manhattan, purchased the land between the Hackensack and the Hudson Rivers from the Lenni Lenape Indian Tribe in 1658, who had called the marshy area “Hopoghan Hackingh”-“Land of the Tobacco Pipe”. The city we now call Hoboken was shaped largely by Colonel John Stevens, who transformed the waterfront in 1820 into a sprawling community with beautiful parks, a riverfront walk, a ferry service, and more. The City of Hoboken was incorporated on March 28, 1855, and began growing rapidly as America’s gateway for immigrants from all over Europe. Today, Hoboken remains a bustling community made up of a plethora of different people and is home to Hoboken Terminal, a major transportation hub in the Greater New York City area.
